Gordon E Blandy's is one of the most prestigious and historic wineries in Madeira wine production, with a tradition dating back over 200 years. Vintage Madeira wines, known as "colheitas" or "vintage", are produced only in exceptional years and represent the pinnacle of quality, intended for prolonged aging. A 1990 Madeira Special would, therefore, be considered a wine of great relevance and value, reflecting a particularly good vintage.

Madeira wines are known for their unique aging process, which includes exposure to heat and oxidation, giving them extraordinary longevity and unparalleled aromatic complexity. A 1990 Madeira would have had ample time to develop a rich, multifaceted profile, characterized by notes of dried fruit, caramel, spice, and a distinct oxidative accent that contributes to its complexity.

Tasting a Blandy's Special 1990 offers the opportunity to explore the depth and evolution of flavors that only aged Madeira wines can offer, with a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, making them suitable both as aperitifs and as meditation or pairing wines to complex desserts.

Considering the special nature of a vintage Madeira such as Blandy's Special 1990, it would be advisable to serve it at a slightly cooled temperature, to best bring out its richness and aromatic complexity. This wine makes a prestigious addition to any wine collection or an unforgettable tasting experience for lovers of fortified wines.

Winery history
Blandy’s is one of the historic names in Madeira production: the Blandy family has led the company for generations, and the label is recognised for preserving traditional ageing techniques and for operating the Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Over the years the company has kept collections of vintage bottles and expanded its portfolio to include frasqueiras, colheitas and blends of different ages.
Production philosophy
It combines respect for traditional Madeira winemaking practices—ageing in the island’s characteristic rooms and casks—with initiatives in innovation and sustainability. The winery emphasises the varietal origins of its wines and the care taken in ageing to express the different styles of Madeira.
Terroir and vineyards
Operations are concentrated on the island of Madeira, with the winery and Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Grapes are sourced from several areas of the island, including Seixal, Câmara de Lobos and Jardim da Serra, and the producer also uses cooler sites, such as Caniçal, for certain ageing.
