Gordon E Blandy's 5 Year Old Blandy's Verdelho is an excellent example of Madeira, a fortified wine that captures the essence of the Verdelho grape, one of the four classic grape varieties used in the production of Madeira. This specific wine combines the freshness and liveliness of Verdelho with the complexity that comes from a carefully controlled aging process.

Blandy's winery, with a history dating back to 1811, is renowned for its experience and tradition in producing high-quality Madeira wines. Aging for 5 years in wooden barrels under the heat of the island of Madeira allows the wine to develop a distinctive character and remarkable complexity, while maintaining the elegance and freshness typical of the Verdelho grape.

During the aging period, the wine undergoes a controlled oxidation process, which contributes to its aromatic richness and characteristic taste profile. The traditional aging method, known as 'Canteiro', involves barrels being kept in naturally heated warehouses, allowing the wine to gradually mature and develop a range of complex flavors and aromas.

Visually, the 5-year-old Blandy's Verdelho has a bright golden color. On the nose, it offers a wide variety of aromas, including dried fruit, candied citrus, sweet spices and slightly oxidative notes that add depth without overpowering the freshness of the wine. In the mouth, the wine demonstrates a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, with a medium structure that makes Verdelho particularly versatile both as an aperitif and as an accompaniment to a wide range of dishes.

Ideal in combination with savory or spicy foods, such as seafood, curry-based dishes or mature cheeses, Blandy's Verdelho aged 5 years is also an excellent choice as a meditation wine, to be enjoyed alone to fully appreciate its complexity and finesse.

Overall, Gordon E Blandy's 5 Year Old Blandy's Verdelho is a splendid example of how Madeira can offer a rich and nuanced tasting experience, testament to the skill and tradition of one of Madeira's most prestigious wine houses.

Winery history
Blandy’s is one of the historic names in Madeira production: the Blandy family has led the company for generations, and the label is recognised for preserving traditional ageing techniques and for operating the Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Over the years the company has kept collections of vintage bottles and expanded its portfolio to include frasqueiras, colheitas and blends of different ages.
Production philosophy
It combines respect for traditional Madeira winemaking practices—ageing in the island’s characteristic rooms and casks—with initiatives in innovation and sustainability. The winery emphasises the varietal origins of its wines and the care taken in ageing to express the different styles of Madeira.
Terroir and vineyards
Operations are concentrated on the island of Madeira, with the winery and Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Grapes are sourced from several areas of the island, including Seixal, Câmara de Lobos and Jardim da Serra, and the producer also uses cooler sites, such as Caniçal, for certain ageing.
