I

Cossart Gordon Sercial 1985 represents one of the most refined expressions of the Sercial grape, known for producing the driest of Madeira wines. This vintage, curated by the historic partnership of Gordon and Blandy's, reflects the pinnacle of Madeira craftsmanship, combining centuries-old tradition with an exceptionally good vintage. Prolonged aging gives this wine a complexity and depth of flavor that makes it a true treasure for enthusiasts.

Sercial, with its characteristic acid profile, is perfectly suited to long ageing, during which it develops an extraordinary range of aromas and flavours. The aging process in temperature-controlled cellars, typical of Madeira wines, allows Cossart Gordon Sercial 1985 to acquire unique notes, while preserving the freshness and liveliness that characterize it.

Visually, the wine presents itself with an elegant light amber color. On the nose, it opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet, offering a wide spectrum of notes ranging from candied citrus fruits to nuances of dried fruit, such as almonds and walnuts, enriched by touches of spices, honey and a slight hint of iodine, reminiscent of its insular origin.

In the mouth, the Sercial 1985 surprises with its impeccable balance between acidity and complexity of flavors. Despite its age, it maintains a surprising freshness and liveliness, with an elegant structure that reveals layers of flavor, including citrus, dried fruit, and a subtle mineral undertone. The finish is long and persistent, with an aftertaste that remains pleasantly dry and invites another sip.

This Madeira is ideal as an aperitif, thanks to its ability to stimulate the palate, but also pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from light starters to fish and seafood, offering a delicious contrast to the savory richness of these foods. Furthermore, it is an excellent companion for post-dinner meditation, allowing for quiet reflection on the complexity and beauty of Madeira wines.

The Cossart Gordon Sercial 1985 is a work of winemaking art, a tribute to the richness of Madeira's winemaking tradition and the ability of Gordon and Blandy's to produce wines that not only stand the test of time, but improve with age, becoming increasingly more fascinating and complex.

Winery history
Blandy’s is one of the historic names in Madeira production: the Blandy family has led the company for generations, and the label is recognised for preserving traditional ageing techniques and for operating the Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Over the years the company has kept collections of vintage bottles and expanded its portfolio to include frasqueiras, colheitas and blends of different ages.
Production philosophy
It combines respect for traditional Madeira winemaking practices—ageing in the island’s characteristic rooms and casks—with initiatives in innovation and sustainability. The winery emphasises the varietal origins of its wines and the care taken in ageing to express the different styles of Madeira.
Terroir and vineyards
Operations are concentrated on the island of Madeira, with the winery and Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal. Grapes are sourced from several areas of the island, including Seixal, Câmara de Lobos and Jardim da Serra, and the producer also uses cooler sites, such as Caniçal, for certain ageing.
